  • The nature reserve of 648 hectacres can be found along the Aniene River that has its origins in Simbruini Mountains and merges with the Tiber, after crossing through the neighborhoods in the eastern suburbs of the city.  The territory is mostly flat and is home to a rich forest (oaks, elms and willows are present) and abudant fauna (shrimp and crayfish, bats). Inside the nature reserve, some points of interest are: Ponte Nomentano dating from the era of Menenio Agrippa, Museo di Casal de’Pazzi with a significant Pleistocene geological deposit, Castello della Cervelletta, a fortified complex with a tall medieval tower, Torre Salaria and the ancient Ponte Salario, which is where, according to legend, the Romans kidnapped the Sabine. For a nature trail we recommend the Sentiero Natura Cervelletta: equipped with explanatory boards, it offers a half hour’s walk to observe the aquatic birds and the irises in bloom.
