  • Nature and acheology just beyond the Grande Raccordo Anulare.

A large 4680 hectares nature reserve, situated beyond the Grande Raccordo Anulare in the north-east section at the height of exits Bufalotta and Salaria. The prevailing tract is made of steep hills intended for grazing and cultivation, in addition to oaks, maples, elms.

The reserve hosts an abundance of wildlife: foxes, wild boars, stone martens, weasels, badgers, porcupines and hares. The territory is characterized by the presence of great agriculture (Marcigliana, Tor S.Giovanni) and majestic farmhouses that developed from Roman villas and medieval villages. Particularly interesting from an archeological standpoint are the ruins of the ancient Latin city of Crustumerium, which was founded between 10th and 9th century B.C.. In addition to that, a short way from Nomentana you can see Catacombs of S.Alessandro with the connected basilica martiriale which dates back to the 5th century. To better appreciate the rich natural heritage of the nature reserve, consider using Sentiero Natur Casale Lucernari which starts from Casa del Parco on Tor S.Giovanni street. The path is a circle and lasts little more than 2 km: a pleasant walk immersed in nature a few steps away from the chaos of GRA.
